Herman Van der Auweraer

Herman is Principal Key Expert and Director Research and Technology Development of the Simulation and Testing Solutions Segment of Siemens Digital Industries Software. After his PhD at KU Leuven in 1986 he joined the KU Leuven mechatronic simulation and testing spin-off LMS International, which was acquired by Siemens in 2013. 

His current responsibilities include the definition and implementation of the segment’s technology strategy across the various product teams, IPR policy, participation in collaborative research programs and coordination of cooperation with universities and strategic technology partners. Herman was involved with -and driving- several technology fields during his career. Recent activities include the integration between machine learning and physics-based modelling, systems engineering for autonomous vehicles and digital twin technologies. 

Herman is guest professor at KU Leuven and was awarded the Doctor Honoris Causa at the Technical University Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Since 2017 he leads the Siemens Company Core Technology on Simulation and Digital Twin, a cross-company initiative to drive Siemens strategic technology fields across the Siemens businesses. He is active in several academic, regional and EU advisory councils and was recently appointed by the Flemish government as member of the Steering Committee of the Flemish Artificial Intelligence program.
